Shooting of archery itself may seem simple at first glance, but in reality, the physical phenomena that occur during the shooting process are much more complex than one might intuitively imagine. Shooting of archery involves various problems that must be solved in order to make the arrow fly straight, and some are common in Kyudo, in other Asian archery, and in Western and archery, and some are different.

First, there is the problem of contact of bow and arrow when an arrow is released. When an archer releases the string with the arrow, the string and the arrow start to flex, which let the arrow contact the bow. The way to solve the problem is different from Asian archery including Kyudo, and Western archery.

The shooting way of Western archery takes advantage of flexing arrow, which is called "Archer's paradox". With the proper tuning of bow equipment, flexing arrow works to avoid the arrow contacting the bow.

In Asian archery including Kyudo, twisting the bow is the solution, which is called "Khatra technique". Kyudo way of releasing by Yunde is different from other Asian Khatra technique", but basic purpose to avoid the bow from contacting an arrow is the same. You can see the effect of Asian Khatra technique on the movie below. In Asian archery, an arrow must be set at the right side of the bow for Khatra technique to twist the bow.

In Asian Khatra technique, the flexing arrow get less vibration and much better, but the arrow still flexes. In Kyudo, an arrow is much longer than those of Asian archery, and the longer arrow is easy to lose the balance by the flexing movement. Therefore, Kyudo technique have got advanced technique form Katra to release by Yunde (left hand), which realizes minimum vibration of arrow. Please refer the article below for more information of release by Yunde.
